Many people are looking to change careers during this tough
economic time. One of the top careers for working from home is medical
transcription.
Long hours at the office, difficult patients, patronizing
doctors, politics, and low wages can all lead to job burnout. There are many different reasons
that someone decides to change careers and looks to work from home. This can include wanting to
make more money, being able to be closer to their family, having a family member with health
issues, etc.
Whatever the personal reasons are for considering a career
change, medical transcription has a lot to offer.
As you will learn while reading through this site; the
earnings and benefits are excellent and the hours are great. There is also a high demand for
qualified MTs.
Choosing a career in medical transcription will allow you to
enjoy the convenience of working at home while continuing to utilize the medical education you
invested time and money in.
The medical transcriptionist is responsible for accurately
transcribing medical reports, including chart notes, history and physical examinations,
consultation letters, operative reports, emergency room reports, diagnostic reports, and
discharge summaries.
"Accuracy" is not necessarily limited to the careful
transcription of a dictation. Accuracy frequently requires the transcription of what a
physician meant to say; rather than what was actually dictated. This is why the medical
transcriptionist needs to know more than just terminology. It is important to know report
formats, how to listen to each of the dictations and to be able to tell what is being said when
they are talking fast, slow, or with an accent. This is the reason transcription services are
eager to hire MTs with digital transcription training. Very few doctors use the tape
transcription method anymore; most are now using digital transcription.
The medical transcription business is based on productivity.
Both the MT and the transcription service she/he works for are paid according to output, so
both accuracy and speed are vital.
You may be surprised by some of the information contained in
this site. MTatHome does not just train you in medical transcription. We also help with job
assistance for those that complete our course. We train you on the proper way to transcribe
with the new technology of digital transcription as well as teach you the aspects of going from
no prior experience to an experienced medical transcriptionist. We work closely with employers
and focus on the business side of medical transcription.
While training is presented as its own reward in most courses;
we consider training to be the means to an end; successful employment! We focus on what top
employers want and what is required to earn a good living, rather than the "fascination" of
medicine.
Consequently, our perspective is different from that of most
training courses, and we carefully place a lot of emphasis on developing strong medical
transcription skills.
